With 95% of infrastructure already in place, Qatar sets its sights on making Olympic history as the first Middle Eastern host nation, building on a bold vision of legacy and sustainability.
Qatar Confirms Bid Discussions to Host 2036 Olympic Games
Qatar has officially entered discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the process to elect the host city for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) confirmed on Tuesday.
Following its successful hosting of global sporting spectacles such as the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and the AFC Asian Cup in 2024, Qatar is the latest nation to signal its intention to join the race for the world’s most prestigious sporting event. Confirmed contenders for the 2036 Games include Indonesia, Turkey, India, and Chile, while other countries showing strong interest include Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Canada.
“We currently have 95% of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities,” said Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, president of the QOC, speaking to the state-run Qatar News Agency.
“This plan is rooted in a long-term vision aimed at building a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable legacy,” he added, emphasizing that Qatar’s Olympic ambitions go beyond the event itself, aiming to inspire future generations and advance global dialogue through sport.
Doha, Qatar’s capital, is already preparing to host the Asian Games in 2030—a milestone it also achieved back in 2006. These international events have helped build a robust sporting infrastructure, reinforcing the nation’s capability to handle events of Olympic scale and complexity.
Should Qatar be successful in its bid, it would make history as the first country in the Middle East to host the Olympic Games, continuing a regional trend of securing high-profile global sports events. Saudi Arabia is already set to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034, signaling the growing influence of the Gulf states on the international sports stage.
As the competition intensifies among potential host nations, Qatar’s well-established sporting facilities, proven event management experience, and forward-thinking vision could prove decisive in its quest to welcome the world to the Olympic Games in 2036.
