Los Angeles, CA – August 4, 2025
Rapper and producer Soulja Boy, born DeAndre Cortez Way, was arrested early Sunday morning in Los Angeles on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The arrest occurred just hours after the artist celebrated his 35th birthday at Hollywood’s Poppy nightclub.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the traffic stop took place around 2:50 a.m. near the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Genesee Avenue in the Fairfax district. Soulja Boy was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle when officers conducted a search and recovered a firearm. LAPD officials have not disclosed the reason for the initial stop. Inmate records show that Way was booked on a felony charge at 6:18 a.m.

The arrest adds to a growing list of legal woes and controversies surrounding the rapper. Just a few months ago in April, Way was found liable in a civil case for assault, sexual battery, and related claims brought by his former personal assistant and romantic partner. A court ordered him to pay over $4 million in compensatory damages, with potential punitive damages still pending.

Sunday’s arrest also comes amid the fallout from a high-profile feud with actor Marlon Wayans. In February, Soulja Boy posted a series of offensive comments on social media aimed at Wayans’ transgender son, prompting backlash. Though he briefly apologized, he later defended his remarks, further fueling public criticism.

On the evening prior to his arrest, Soulja Boy appeared to be in celebratory spirits, sharing videos from his birthday party with his 7 million Instagram followers. In one post, he confidently stated, “I don’t need no security.” He also showcased a packed dance floor and promoted new music tied to his recent album, The Influence, which debuted in February.

Sunday’s arrest now marks yet another chapter in a turbulent phase of the rapper’s life and career. Representatives for Soulja Boy have yet to comment on the incident.
