Country star addresses onstage incident at North Dakota State Fair, reflects on fan behavior trends, and jokes about being mistaken for Blake Shelton
Country superstar and American Idol judge Luke Bryan is speaking out after a startling moment on stage, when a fan threw a ball that struck him in the face during his performance at the North Dakota State Fair on July 27.
In a TikTok video that quickly went viral, the 49-year-old singer was seen recoiling mid-performance of his 2011 hit “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” as the object made contact. The crowd audibly gasped, but Bryan quickly regained composure and continued the song like a pro.

Reflecting on the incident in an interview with Taste of Country, Bryan said, “It’s the last song of the night. It was a big ole fun party, and I think one person just took it too far.”
He also highlighted the growing issue of audience members throwing items at performers, referencing similar incidents that affected stars like Harry Styles and Bebe Rexha. “You see it. Every other entertainer out there is getting stuff — you get stuff thrown at ya,” he added.
While he admitted he briefly considered jumping off stage to confront the fan, Bryan ultimately decided against it to avoid disrupting the energy of the show. “I mean, if I saw him throw it, I could have gone right to him. I probably would have jumped right off in there,” he said. “But it would’ve ruined the vibe.”
Beyond the concert stage, Bryan recently wrapped Season 23 of American Idol, with Jamal Roberts taking the winner’s title. He also released his eighth studio album, Mind of a Country Boy, earlier in 2024, continuing his successful run in the country music scene.
Known for his charm and humor, Bryan shared a lighthearted moment earlier this year on The Jennifer Hudson Show, recalling a time when a gas station attendant confused him for fellow country star Blake Shelton. “He goes, ‘There’s no way you’re Blake, because Blake wouldn’t be here shopping at this gas station,’” Bryan laughed, adding, “And then he says, ‘Could you imagine having Blake Shelton’s money?’”
Despite the onstage mishap, Luke Bryan’s charisma and professionalism remain intact, proving once again why he’s a beloved figure in the world of country music.
