While Wang previously focused on developing music schools—having opened one in Shanghai in 2023—his attention in 2025 is turning toward international festivals that celebrate classical music on a grand scale.

A Love Story Rooted in Music and Travel
Despite his constant movement, congyu has found a home in Réunion Island, where he lives with his wife. Their love story began in Paris, where they met as students, eventually getting engaged and navigating long-distance challenges before settling on the island.
Wang shares that he chose to live on Réunion Island because that’s where his wife is from. They met in Paris while she was doing an internship and he was studying music—they met at church, and even though he had to return to Singapore for national service and she went back home, they made their relationship work.
Now, with his busy career and recognition as a Steinway Artist, Wang is traveling more than ever. “It’s like constantly putting out fires,” he says. “Every day brings something unexpected—you never know what challenges or surprises you’ll face.”
For him, this unpredictability keeps life exciting.
The Pursuit of Passion Over Routine
Wang’s career is a mix of performing, teaching, and entrepreneurship. While he once owned several music schools, he has chosen to prioritize artistic freedom over routine teaching schedules.
“I love teaching, but doing it for seven hours a day, every day, can stifle creativity,” he admits. “It feels like you’re losing half your life to routine.”
This year, congyu is launching a new music school in Shanghai, an exciting project that reflects his commitment to mentoring young musicians while maintaining his global performance schedule.
Musical Philosophy and Performance Choices
For Wang, every piece he plays has a deep personal connection. When asked how he selects his concert repertoire, he explains:
“I think life is too short to live with regret. I pick my repertoire carefully, choosing pieces that resonate with me.”
His selections vary based on the performance setting:
- For traditional piano festivals: Romantic-era programs featuring Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel.
- For private concerts: A more accessible selection, including Gershwin, Debussy, and modern arrangements of famous tunes.
A particularly meaningful performance for him was Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 at Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore. “It was the first concerto I learned after moving to Paris,” he says, “and I had the privilege of learning it with teachers who had direct connections to Rachmaninoff himself.”
