It has been nearly a year since the world lost Matthew Perry, beloved star of Friends, and his family is now ready to share the intimate details of their final moments with him. In a heartfelt interview with Today, scheduled to air on October 28, the first anniversary of Perry’s death, his mother, Suzanne Morrison, opened up about their last conversations and the deep love they shared.

Reflecting on a significant encounter shortly before his passing, Morrison recalled a moment when Perry was showing her one of his new homes. “He came up to me and he said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now,’” she shared, describing it as almost prophetic. The warmth of this exchange struck Morrison as particularly meaningful, noting, “How long has it been since we’ve had a conversation like that? It’s been years.”

Despite his struggles with addiction throughout his adult life, Perry had been sober for over a year before his tragic death due to an overdose of ketamine. Morrison recounted Perry’s final words with a sense of foreboding: “There was an inevitability to what was going to happen next to him, and he felt it very strongly. But he said, ‘I’m not frightened anymore,’ and it worried me.”

Perry, who was born to Suzanne and her ex-husband John Bennett Perry, later remarried Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison, with whom she had four other children. The family has remained united in their grief and continues to seek justice in the wake of Perry’s untimely passing.

In August, the Department of Justice announced criminal charges against five individuals for allegedly providing Perry with the ketamine that led to his death. Among those charged were Perry’s personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and two doctors, Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez. The Morrison family expressed their heartache while emphasizing their gratitude for the seriousness with which law enforcement has approached the case. “We were and still are heartbroken by Matthew’s death, but it has helped to know law enforcement has taken his case very seriously,” they stated. “We look forward to justice taking its course and we’re grateful for the exceptional work of the multiple agencies whose agents investigated Matthew’s death.”

As they navigate this challenging time, Morrison and her family are determined to honor Perry’s legacy and ensure that the message about the dangers of illicit drug supplies is heard loud and clear. In the words of Perry’s former co-star Lisa Kudrow, the best way to remember him is through the joy he brought to so many lives, rather than the circumstances of his passing.
