Kansas Frontman Ronnie Platt Announces Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis: “Just a Bump in the Road”

Kansas frontman Ronnie Platt remains optimistic after thyroid cancer diagnosis, as the band cancels tour dates for his recovery

Despite the setback, the 64-year-old singer reassures fans with an optimistic update as Kansas cancels two upcoming tour dates for his recovery.

Kansas frontman Ronnie Platt has revealed he has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, but in an encouraging update to fans, he reassured them that the condition is treatable and not life-threatening. The 64-year-old singer, known for his powerful vocals on hits like Carry On Wayward Son, shared the news on social media, describing the diagnosis as “just a bump in the road” and expressing confidence in his recovery.

“I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer on Tuesday, but before everyone gets all excited, it has a 99% survival rate,” Platt wrote on Facebook. “It has not spread; it is contained to my thyroid. I just have to have my thyroid removed, go through some rehab time, and be right back in the saddle.” His message was met with an outpouring of love and support from fans and loved ones, which Platt described as deeply moving.

“I have some absolutely amazing people going to bat for me!!” he added, highlighting the strength and encouragement he’s received from his community. “As it has been put to me, this is just a bump in the road and will be behind me very soon! So everyone please CARRY ON!”

Tour Dates Affected by Platt’s Health

In light of his diagnosis, Kansas has made the difficult decision to cancel two upcoming concerts in Louisiana. The shows in New Orleans on February 21 and Lake Charles on March 1 have been called off “due to band illness and doctor advisement.” The band has assured fans that all tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase and expressed their sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Additionally, Kansas has postponed two concerts in Oklahoma, originally scheduled for February in Catoosa and Durant, to November. The band’s assistant manager, J.R. Rees, commented, “Right now, we’re all focused on supporting Ronnie through this, and our goal is to be back on the road as soon as possible.”

The cancellations and rescheduling are a temporary setback, but with Platt’s optimistic outlook, fans can be assured that Kansas plans to return to the stage once Platt has fully recovered.

A Resilient Career and a Bright Future Ahead

Known for his distinctive voice, Platt became the frontman for Kansas in 2014, following the retirement of original singer Steve Walsh. He had previously fronted the rock band Shooting Star but quickly made his mark with Kansas, contributing to their albums The Prelude Implicit (2016) and The Absence of Presence (2020).

Kansas celebrated their 50th anniversary tour in 2023, bringing joy to fans old and new with a series of performances that showcased their timeless sound. The band’s ongoing journey is far from over. Platt, an experienced performer with a passionate fanbase, has expressed his commitment to the band and his desire to return to touring once his health allows.

Kansas is set to hit the road again this year, with scheduled performances alongside iconic acts like Jefferson Starship, 38 Special, and The Outlaws. Though these upcoming dates have been affected by Platt’s health, there’s little doubt that the band’s loyal followers will be waiting eagerly for their return to the stage.

Moving Forward with Hope

Ronnie Platt’s diagnosis has certainly shaken up the Kansas family, but the singer’s positive attitude and resilience have been a beacon of hope for his supporters. With a successful treatment plan in place and the support of his bandmates and fans, Platt is ready to conquer this challenge and return to doing what he does best—performing.

For now, Kansas fans will need to be patient, but it’s clear that with Platt’s spirit and strength, the band will be back on track soon enough. “CARRY ON,” as the iconic Kansas anthem encourages, and in this case, the message rings especially true.
