Dr. Meleeka Clary: A Journey of Strength, Resilience, and Transformation

From a Humble Beginning to the Heights of Success

Dr. Meleeka Clary’s story is one of triumph, resilience, and determination. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, into a large blended family, Meleeka was the sixth of eight children. Her father, Andrew Lee Clary, Sr., an entrepreneur, and her mother, Larriana Clary, a model, both instilled strong values in her that would guide her through the toughest of challenges. As a woman of mixed heritage—Black, Cherokee Indian, and Portuguese—Meleeka’s journey reflects the complexities of identity, family, and ambition.

The Foundation of Strength: A Childhood Full of Love and Lessons

Raised in Mattapan, Massachusetts, Meleeka’s childhood was not without its struggles. Her father, a dreamer and businessman, battled substance abuse while navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship in the 60s. Despite his challenges, he instilled a never-give-up attitude in his children, particularly Meleeka, encouraging them to pursue their greatest abilities.

Her mother, a deeply religious and loving woman, suffered from a nervous breakdown and depression, having dedicated her life to her husband. Despite these hardships, both parents did everything they could to raise their children with dignity and purpose.

Meleeka was drawn to the performing arts at a young age. Enrolled in Vicki’s School of Dancing and Acting by the age of eight, she flourished in tap, ballet, and jazz. Her talent shone when she was cast as Harriet Tubman in her middle school play at just 13. This was only the beginning of what would be a lifelong passion for the arts.

Early Independence and Personal Challenges

Life took a dramatic turn when both of her parents became seriously ill. Her older brother, Andrew Lee Clary, Jr., assumed the role of caretaker during her high school years. However, Meleeka’s drive for independence led her to move out on her own at the age of 17. Forced to drop out of Brighton High School to work, she faced life’s challenges head-on.

At 18, tragedy struck when her father passed away from a bleeding ulcer. With her mother’s health deteriorating further, Meleeka took on the responsibility of caring for her, a role she would cherish despite the hardships. Determined to honor her father’s wish for her to finish school, Meleeka returned to night school, re-enrolling at Madison High School and eventually earning her high school diploma.

By 21, Meleeka had already purchased her first home as a real estate investor, a testament to her incredible determination and entrepreneurial spirit. However, her love for acting and dancing could not be fully realized due to sexual harassment threats in the industry, forcing her to step away for several years.

Education, Family, and New Beginnings

Despite the challenges, Meleeka pursued higher education with unwavering commitment. She earned her Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice from Newbury College and Curry College, followed by a Master’s degree from Curry College, solidifying her career in the legal and justice system. Alongside this, she earned a paralegal degree from Northeastern University.

As a single mother of three, Meleeka juggled raising her children, caring for her ailing mother, and maintaining multiple jobs to provide a comfortable lifestyle for her family. Her journey took her to Indiana, where she married and later experienced a difficult divorce following the birth of her son. Health complications during her pregnancy added further hurdles, yet Meleeka’s strength never wavered.

The Power of Reinvention

Now pursuing her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Walden University, Dr. Meleeka Clary has taken her life experiences and turned them into fuel for her continued success. She understands the power of the mind and how important mental health is, a realization born from her own life’s struggles.
