The actress opens up about her health, future ambitions, and a renewed passion for acting and writing.
Selma Blair is embracing a future filled with hope, ambition, and dreams she once thought were beyond her reach.
The Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions star, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2018 and has been in remission since 2021, shared an inspiring update during an appearance at The Daily Front Row’s 9th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Thursday. Speaking with PEOPLE, Blair revealed she is “truly relapse-free” and feeling stronger than ever.
“I am doing amazingly well. I’ve been feeling great for about a year,” Blair said, radiating optimism. “I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy, getting out and going out isn’t so scary anymore.”
Blair’s renewed health has also shifted her perspective on the future. “It’s funny, I haven’t spent enough time having dreams,” she reflected. “And now it’s like, what are my dreams?” She explained that much of her life post-diagnosis had been focused simply on managing fatigue and getting through each day. “Now, I realize I don’t know what my goals are — but I’m excited to find out.”
With her health stabilized, Blair is setting her sights on a more career-focused path. She shared her desire to return to acting and to continue her advocacy for people living with chronic illnesses. Blair, who authored her 2022 memoir Mean Baby, also revealed plans to write a young adult fantasy novel, inspired by classics like The Secret Garden.
Since her diagnosis, Blair has been candid about the challenges and triumphs of living with MS. In a 2023 interview with British Vogue, she spoke about her initial fears that her acting career might be over. However, with an industry becoming more inclusive and understanding of diverse health needs, Blair expressed optimism. “I haven’t actively pursued work in acting — it hasn’t been the right time yet — but it’s absolutely doable for me. I have to take the leap,” she said at the time.
It appears that leap is already underway. In January, Variety reported that Blair had signed on for three new projects: the Israel-Hamas war drama Stay Forte; There There, a reunion project for the Polish brothers; and the supernatural thriller Silent.
As Selma Blair steps into this next chapter of her life, she does so with resilience, creativity, and an unwavering sense of possibility — a true testament to her journey and the dreams now finally within her reach.
