The comedian opens up about her recent surgery, past health battles, and signature humor as she recovers from a hysterectomy due to a precancerous condition.

Kathy Griffin is facing another health challenge — and doing it with her trademark wit.

The 64-year-old comedian announced on Monday that she recently underwent a hysterectomy after doctors discovered a precancerous condition. In a text-only Instagram post, Griffin shared the news with fans, opening her message with a chipper “Happy Monday!” before revealing the serious nature of her surgery.

“That’s right they took out the uterus, the fallopian tubes & the ovaries. Pre-cancerous, blah blah blah,” she wrote. While she didn’t disclose further medical details, Griffin teased she’d be sharing more in an upcoming Patreon post — particularly about her experience with her self-described “private ‘nurse,’” whose qualifications (and political commentary) provided a moment of levity.

“She also thinks that ‘tariffs’ are ‘terrorists,’” Griffin joked. “So she kept saying stuff like ‘I don’t like Trump anymore because the price of eggs is going up and now he’s adding terrorists!’”

In classic Griffin fashion, she couldn’t resist poking fun at the absurdity of her own situation. “Not to be an a–hole, but how do I NOT have a reality show to capture all of this???” she wrote in the caption. “I mean, you can’t write it. It’s too real.”

Fans flooded the comments with well wishes and shared their own personal experiences with similar procedures. Many praised Griffin’s resilience and humor in the face of yet another health scare.

A History of Health Battles

This isn’t Griffin’s first medical challenge in recent years. In August 2021, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with Stage 1 lung cancer, despite never having smoked. At the time, she informed fans via Twitter just before undergoing surgery to remove half of her left lung.

“Yes, I have lung cancer even though I’ve never smoked!” she wrote. “The doctors are very optimistic… Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing.”

Following the surgery, Griffin appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in December of that year and announced she had beaten cancer, sharing that she had unknowingly lived with a lung tumor for a decade. Throughout her health journey, she has consistently used her platform to encourage fans to stay on top of their medical checkups, reminding them, “It’ll save your life.”

Looking Ahead

Though Griffin’s hysterectomy marks another challenging chapter in her health journey, she remains characteristically upbeat. Her post suggests she’s already on the road to recovery — with plans to share more about her experience soon.

As she continues to heal, fans are celebrating her openness, resilience, and the candid humor that has made her one of comedy’s most fearless voices. Whether or not she lands that reality show, Kathy Griffin’s real-life strength and storytelling continue to keep audiences engaged — and inspired.
