Kate Winslet Hints at Long-Awaited Return to Mare of Easttown

The Oscar winner says meaningful conversations are underway, with a strong chance the acclaimed HBO series could resume filming in 2027

Nearly five years after Mare of Easttown gripped audiences with its raw storytelling and unforgettable performances, Kate Winslet has offered fans a surprising and hopeful update: a second season may finally be on the horizon.

Fresh off directing her first feature film, Goodbye June, the Oscar-winning actress revealed in a recent interview that she is closer than ever to reprising her Emmy-winning role as Mare Sheehan, the hardened Philadelphia detective at the heart of HBO’s critically acclaimed crime drama.

Reflecting on the show’s powerful conclusion in 2021, Winslet admitted the story once felt complete. “It was done and dusted, finished,” she said. However, her recent work behind the camera sparked renewed discussions about the future of the series. What began as casual conversations has now evolved into what Winslet describes as “proper conversations around a timeframe when it could be possible.”

For the first time since the show ended, Winslet says she genuinely believes a continuation will happen. “We probably will do it, and that’s the first time I’ve felt that,” she shared, signaling a shift in momentum that longtime fans have been waiting for.

While production is not expected to begin this year, Winslet indicated there is a strong likelihood that filming could take place in 2027. She reiterated her confidence in that timeline, emphasizing that discussions have reached a meaningful and realistic stage.

Mare of Easttown starred an exceptional ensemble cast including Jean Smart, Julianne Nicholson, and Evan Peters. Winslet, Nicholson, and Peters all took home Emmy Awards for their performances, while Smart earned a nomination. The series was widely praised for its emotional depth, grounded realism, and willingness to defy audience expectations.

An HBO spokesperson declined to add further details, noting that there is nothing new to announce beyond Winslet’s comments. Representatives for series creator Brad Ingelsby have also been contacted for additional insight.

Ingelsby, meanwhile, has continued his success on HBO with Task, a Philadelphia-set crime series starring Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent investigating armed robberies and a child’s disappearance. Given the shared setting of both shows, Ruffalo hinted that the worlds of Mare of Easttown and Task could one day intersect, though nothing has been formally confirmed.

Ingelsby has previously spoken about his storytelling approach, noting that a shocking death early in a series creates a sense that anything can happen. This narrative tension, he explained, keeps audiences invested, knowing no character is ever truly safe.

For now, fans can only wait — but for the first time in years, the return to Easttown feels less like a distant hope and more like an impending reality. If Mare Sheehan does return to the screen, it appears she’ll do so with the same grit, emotional weight, and uncompromising honesty that made the series a modern television classic.
