Outer Banks star opts for yoga and mindfulness over joining Hollywood’s toughest in the gym
Chase Stokes, star of Netflix’s hit series Outer Banks, recently shared a hilarious and relatable encounter with Hollywood’s heaviest hitters: Chris Hemsworth and Arnold Schwarzenegger. While Stokes’ character, John B. Routledge, is known for pulling off daring feats, the actor admitted he wasn’t quite up to the challenge of joining Hemsworth and Schwarzenegger for an impromptu “bro workout” during their time in Brazil.
Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Stokes explained that the incident took place during Netflix’s annual Tudum fan event, which he was co-hosting. When Stokes entered the hotel gym, he was surprised to see Hemsworth and Schwarzenegger mid-workout. “That’s too much man for me,” Stokes told Fallon, explaining that Hemsworth casually invited him to join in.
Rather than take on the challenge, Stokes made the quick decision to “sprint out” and opt for something less intense, like yoga and mindful breathing. “I’m just gonna go do some yoga, a little mindful breathing… hit the treadmill actually,” he joked, acknowledging that a workout alongside the stars of Thor and Terminator was a bit out of his league.
Stokes, who has starred as John B. on Outer Banks since 2020, admitted that his role as Tudum host was not one he eagerly accepted due to his self-proclaimed social anxiety. “I’m arguably the worst person to host anything,” he said, laughing about how his nerves only worsened when he was tasked with introducing Chris Hemsworth to the crowd.
Things took an embarrassing turn backstage when Stokes, doing his best impression of Hemsworth’s iconic role as Thor, was asked by Netflix staff to stop because Hemsworth had just entered the building and was within earshot. “I was like, ‘Oh s—,'” Stokes admitted, recalling the awkward moment.
Despite the mishap, Hemsworth was gracious when they finally met. Stokes described the Extraction star as “the perfect human specimen,” marveling at Hemsworth’s chiseled physique, particularly his biceps, which Stokes found “insane.”
Although Stokes may have skipped the opportunity for a workout with two of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, his character John B. has never needed brute strength to navigate the intense challenges of Outer Banks. The series returns for Season 4 with five new episodes dropping on October 10, followed by the remaining five episodes on November 7. Fans can expect even more high-stakes adventure as John B. and his friends continue to battle for survival.
With Netflix’s event behind him and Season 4 on the horizon, Stokes’ encounter with Hemsworth and Schwarzenegger will likely remain a humorous highlight of his career—a reminder that even TV stars sometimes feel out of their depth when faced with Hollywood’s biggest action heroes.
