Dennis Mailu Enters the Nightmare Realm in Parasomnia

As Shudder Acquires the Festival Horror Standout, ‘Parasomnia’ the Award-Winning Actor Dennis Mailu Continues His Rise from Nairobi to Hollywood

For Dennis Mailu, success has never arrived overnight. Long before stepping onto professional film sets in Los Angeles, the Kenyan-born actor was learning the fundamentals of storytelling through stage performance, discovering the transformative power of character while growing up in Nairobi. That early passion eventually carried him across continents, first to the United Kingdom, where he spent nearly a decade developing his craft, and later to Los Angeles, where he trained at both the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the New York Film Academy.

Today, Mailu stands as one of a growing number of international actors successfully bridging cultures and industries. A recipient of the prestigious Charles Jehlinger Award for Excellence in Acting, he has steadily built a body of work spanning film, television, action projects, psychological thrillers, and festival favorites, earning recognition for performances that combine emotional authenticity with physical precision.

Recent years have seen him appear in projects including Blue Light Melody, Big George Foreman, PREY, The Spell That Backfired, BET, and the award-winning thriller Person of Interest, the latter earning him multiple Best Supporting Actor honors during its international festival run. Yet even with an increasingly diverse résumé, Mailu remains focused on one thing above all else: challenging himself as a performer.

That commitment led him into one of his most physically and psychologically demanding projects to date, the horror feature Parasomnia, which Variety recently reported as being acquired by streaming giant Shudder.

A Horror Film Making Major Noise

Written and directed by James Ross II in his feature directorial debut, Parasomnia follows Riley, a young woman haunted by recurring night terrors and unresolved trauma. When her closest friend mysteriously disappears, she begins to suspect that the terrifying demonic figure stalking her dreams may have crossed into reality.

The psychological horror stars Jasmine Mathews, RJ Brown, Sally Stewart, Stephen Barrington, and Danny Brown, weaving together supernatural horror, emotional trauma, and nightmare logic into a chilling exploration of fear and memory.

The film has already generated substantial momentum on the festival circuit, screening at the prestigious FrightFest UK, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, and the 2026 Overlook Film Festival, one of the genre’s most respected showcases. Its growing reputation recently culminated in a major industry milestone when horror streaming giant Shudder acquired worldwide rights to the film ahead of Overlook, with plans to release it to audiences later this year.

For a debut feature from Ross II, the acquisition represents a significant victory. For Mailu, it marks another important step in an increasingly impressive career trajectory.

Bringing a Nightmare to Life

In Parasomnia, Mailu portrays a dead version of Riley’s father, an unsettling manifestation that exists within the dream world and embodies one of the most traumatic moments from her past.

It is not a conventional horror role.

Rather than relying solely on dialogue, the character exists largely through presence, movement, and physical expression, requiring Mailu to communicate menace, grief, rage, and memory simultaneously.

I play a dead version of Riley’s dad in the void while she is in her dream state,” Mailu explains. “He represents a horrific moment in Riley’s past.

The role immediately appealed to the actor because it demanded a different set of storytelling tools than many traditional dramatic performances.

This was my first major feature film using extensive prosthetics and special effects makeup,” he says. “I really enjoyed the expressiveness and physicality of performing through that transformation. My character exists in a hypnotic state filled with rage, and finding the balance between those two extremes became the artistic challenge.”

Blood, Prosthetics, and Precision

Filmed at Capital Arts Movie Studio in Los Angeles, Parasomnia pushed Mailu into unfamiliar territory. While he had previously worked in physically demanding productions, horror presented an entirely different technical challenge. The extensive prosthetic makeup designed to create his undead appearance dramatically limited his visibility, forcing him to perform complex attack sequences while barely being able to see.

The most difficult part was seeing through the prosthetic eye work while remaining accurate with every movement,” Mailu recalls. “I had to synchronize my attacks with the blood effects and artery pumps attached to the victim. Everything had to be timed perfectly.”

The result was a unique blend of choreography and chaos. “It was fun, messy, and very technical all at once,” he laughs. “We definitely needed extra wardrobe standing by.

Fortunately, Mailu found himself surrounded by a highly experienced crew. “I was in the best possible hands. The makeup department had worked on multiple blockbuster films, including projects within the Marvel universe. Knowing that gave me a lot of confidence and allowed me to focus completely on the performance.

The Evolution of a Performer

For audiences discovering Mailu through Parasomnia, the role offers another glimpse into what has become one of his defining strengths: the ability to fully commit to physically demanding characters without sacrificing emotional truth.

Whether portraying law enforcement officers, action-driven roles, psychologically complex figures, or supernatural manifestations, Mailu consistently approaches performance from the perspective of behavior first. It is an approach shaped by years of stage work, martial arts training, and a deep fascination with human psychology. That combination has increasingly attracted attention from filmmakers looking for actors capable of delivering both intensity and nuance.

Looking Ahead

With Parasomnia now set for release through Shudder following its successful festival run, the film represents more than just another credit for Mailu. It is another example of his willingness to embrace creative risk and push beyond familiar territory. For an actor whose journey began in Nairobi and has taken him through London and Hollywood, those risks have become a defining characteristic.

As his profile continues to rise, Mailu remains focused on growth rather than destination.

And if Parasomnia proves anything, it is that some of the most memorable performances often emerge from stepping directly into the darkness.

For Dennis Mailu, that darkness may be exactly where audiences discover him next.

Parasomnia is expected to premiere on Shudder later this year following the streamer’s acquisition of the film after its acclaimed festival run.
