She’s not just disrupting an industry—she’s rewriting the way we think, talk, and feel about pain.

Meet Jen, a trailblazing pain science educator and physiotherapist who is bringing revolutionary knowledge to screens worldwide through a groundbreaking new docu-series titled “Knowledge and Action: Rethinking Pain, Reducing Threat, Restoring Safety.” In collaboration with Alfa Orion Media, Jen is sharing a life-changing message: pain is not a life sentence—and the science proves it.

This series isn’t just U.S.-centric. It’s a global movement. From Latin America to Asia, from Dubai to Europe and the USA, Jen’s mission is clear: help the world understand pain through a new lens, empowering people to regain control over their bodies, nervous systems, and ultimately, their lives.

Interview with Jen: The Woman Behind the Movement

Sara: Jen, let’s start simple. Why pain?
Jen: My driving purpose has always been to empower others to help themselves. At the beginning of my career, I cared and was compassionate, but I lacked the skills to help many patients. Early in my career, I worked with a patient living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, then known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, and I realized I had no tools or answers to offer him. That experience never left me, and the uncertainty stayed with me for decades. This made me so curious. Why did this gentleman hurt so intensely, and nothing I learned made sense? It became clear: if I truly wanted to help others, I needed to deeply understand pain from the inside out.

Sara: And that led to Adriaan Louw?
Jen: Yes. My mentor and big supporter. Adriaan saw something in me that others didn’t. He taught me the science and reminded me of the power of believing in someone before they believe in themselves. He did that for me, and this is the reason I am here with you now.

Sara: There was a moment, a brain scan, laundry, a lightbulb—tell us.
Jen: (Laughs) I was folding laundry during a pain science lecture by Adriaan when I saw a brain scan of someone before and after learning about pain. The difference was massive and mind-blowing. That was the moment I knew: understanding pain changes pain.

Pain Isn’t What You Think It Is

Sara: You’re saying pain doesn’t always mean injury?
Jen: Correct. Pain is an output of the brain, 100 percent of the time. It is not always related to tissue damage. And the longer someone has struggled with pain, it is much less likely to be about the tissues and more about the sensitivity of the nervous system. Adriaan says, “You have a pain issue, not a tissue issue.” Pain is influenced by our beliefs about pain, knowledge (or myths, as often is the case), our experiences, culture, and yes—even the weather. If your brain perceives a threat, it will create pain to protect you because that is the very important job of your brain. And this can happen even if your tissues are beautiful and healthy.

Sara: And people think they’re broken.
Jen: Sadly, yes. They are not broken. Their nervous system is doing its job of protecting—it’s just doing it too well.

From Questioning Everything to Teaching the World

Sara: You’ve never been someone who “fits in.” How has that shaped your path?
Jen: I’m the youngest of nine. Always the question-asker. I got kicked off my softball team in college for speaking up. However, that curiosity became my superpower. Now I teach others how to question their pain, release its grip, and get back to what matters most to them.

Sara: And now you’re taking it global.
Jen: Yes. Knowledge and Action: Rethinking Pain, Reducing Threat, Restoring Safety is being produced with Alfa Orion Media to reach people worldwide. This isn’t U.S.-centric. We’re bringing this message to the entire world because pain is a universal human experience. One in three humans worldwide experience chronic pain, and this includes kids and teens. Access to pain science should be global too.

This Work Isn’t Just About You. It’s About All of Us.

Sara: You’ve said pain impacts more than just the person in pain.
Jen: Absolutely. What do you feel when you see a loved one in pain? Now imagine that happening for months, years, or even decades. Your loved one is in pain, and you are dealing with your struggle, watching them. Families and friends tend to either over-help or dismiss it entirely. Both can hurt more than help. Education changes that dynamic. Knowledge about pain transforms the journey into a team effort, promoting shared decisions, stronger support, and a path defined by collective insight rather than isolation.

Sara: You’ve helped me see that in my own life.
Jen: Awareness is always the first step. Once you understand how pain works, you can make better decisions about what to do when you feel pain. Knowledge creates safety in the nervous system, and this leads to lowering the brain’s perception of threat. That leads to less pain. The fear of pain can be debilitating. Understanding how pain works eases that fear and leads to action.

Closing Thoughts

Sara: What’s the first thing you think about every morning?
Jen: “I can. I am. I will. iRise.”

Sara: And what do you want the world to know?
Jen: Pain is not a life sentence. Your brain and nervous system are amazing. Sometimes, they do their job too well. Knowledge, strategies, tools—this is your path to becoming chronically painless.
